Danielle's Story
“Before I found out about EMDR, I had tried other therapies, but they didn’t help.”
Eight months before she came for therapy Danielle was in a car crash. Although nobody was seriously hurt, she found it difficult to sleep because of nightmares, which often involved her being trapped in a car or some other situation. She reported feeling anxious and distracted much of the time at work and home. When Danielle heard a loud noise she was startled and sometimes images of the crash would flood into her mind. She described being ‘on edge’ in case something bad was going to happen even though she was safe. Sometimes she would get so panicked in the car she would pull over and break into tears. The disrupted sleep and on-going anxiety began to get in the way of Danielle’s life and she started to feel very down. EMDR helps the brain and body process, very rapidly, traumatic events so that so that they are no longer so distressing. For Danielle, through EMDR treatment, she was able to fully process the trauma of the crash so that it was an event in the past rather than the present.
"After about 4 sessions I noticed I was sleeping better and was less anxious. After 6 sessions I wasn’t having any more nightmares and I was much more confident driving. I feel like I’ve now got my life back.”
